Many people question whether timber treatments are suitable, or even safe, to use on beehives.
Yes it is! As the outside of the hive is exposed to the elements and would suggest that to ensure best practice, it is only the exterior of the hives that are treated with the Copper Naphthenate as Bee’s are inherently clean insects, therefore treating only the outside of the hives will reduce any possibly chance of the Bees coming into contact with the Naphthenate salts. By treating the outside, this ensures the wood lasts longer and that any rot or degradation from the outside is slowed and doesn’t reach the inside of the hive. However, full treatment of the entire piece of wood is safe for Bees, given that the wood has been left to ‘weather’ for at least 6 weeks. This also applies to the Zinc Salts treatment.
We also recommend that you leave your wood to “weather” for a period of at least 6 weeks ensure that all of the Solvent Carrier (used to carry the Copper Naphthenate salts into the timber) has evaporated from the timber. This ensures that there is no solvent that will interact with your paint and ensure a strong coat of paint stays in place. This further increases the longevity of the wood and therefore your hive.
