Wax moth is the bane of my beekeeping life. I hate the critters! Too often when I come to get some stored hiveware in the spring I am confronted with chewed out comb, cocoons welded to the woodware, grubs eating happily, and adult moths skittering about the place. But chemical control of wax moth is no longer an option. Any trace of moth-balls in the honey or the wax and it will be rejected at the border of Europe. Plus it is not an approved treatment in New Zealand either.
Tansy is an organic wax moth control. The aroma of Tansy leaves deters wax moth. In the autumn when you are packing away your honey supers, stack with a good spread of Tansy leaves between each box. Then if you are able, wrap the whole lot with pallet stretch wrap. Minimise any places the wax moth can enter, and the Tansy should do the rest. If you are unable to tightly wrap, renew your Tansy leaves at least every month.
I have also heard that Tansy planted under an apple tree helps deter Coddling Moth, so why not plant your Tansy there and get two benefits from this plant.
Tansy grows to 90cm and has highly aromatic fern like leaves. Perennial, Sow into pots in spring. Full sun. One packet will grow plenty of Tansy for a hobbyist beekeeper.
