3/4 depth box (super, 3/4 deep, or storey) assembled. Heat treated. Already assembled.
Thermally modified wood, or the protected name ThermoWood, is wood that has been heated to about 200C in an atmosphere without oxygen. The wood sugars are cooked, so that moulds and fungi don’t have anything to feed on. The literature says that the wood is literally changed to another species, and its physical characteristics are permanently changed. My experience is that the wood is more brittle, and more care is needed using nails and screws. I would always pre-drill to assemble ThermoWood. Because of the treatment method, it is substantially more expensive than untreated wood components, but I know several commercial beekeepers who use nothing but ThermoWood boxes and floors. They have woodware that is five years old and looks as good as new. And of course you don’t have any issues as with chemical treatments or the physical hazards of paraffin wax dipping. I expect ThermoWood will grow in popularity as a result.
The 3/4 depth supers are ideal for people not wanting to lift heavy hives full of bees. The 3/4 depth box has just the right amount of space for queen and bees to move about their business and still provide enough room for the queen to lay and nurse bees to look after the larvae. The 3/4 depth box is perfect for honey supers as once full, the box is a manageable weight to move without too much discomfort.
