Full depth Langstroth box (super, deep, storey, brood-box). Assembled. Heat treated. Commercial grade may have tight knots, but no gaps or holes.

Thermally modified wood, or the protected name ThermoWood, is wood that has been heated to about 200C in an atmosphere without oxygen. The wood sugars are cooked, so that moulds and fungi don’t have anything to feed on. The literature says that the wood is literally changed to another species, and its physical characteristics are permanently changed. My experience is that the wood is more brittle, and more care is needed using nails and screws. I would always pre-drill to assemble ThermoWood.  Because of the treatment method, it is substantially more expensive than untreated wood components, but I know several commercial beekeepers who use nothing but ThermoWood boxes and floors. They have woodware that is five years old and looks as good as new. And of course you don’t have any issues as with chemical treatments or the physical hazards of paraffin wax dipping. I expect ThermoWood will grow in popularity as a result.

The full depth super is generally used as a brood box, this means that the queen has free roaming ability within this box to lay. The full depth box accommodates a larger frame compared to a 3/4 depth box creating more space for the queen to lay and maximise the hives population. Some Beekeepers prefer a complete full depth system, it allows greater space for honey but you'll find chugging around hundreds of full depth boxes full of honey becomes quite a mission. This is why beekeepers generally use full depth boxes for raising brood and then using 3/4 depth boxes for honey as it will weigh less when the honey flow ends.
